Elopements

An elopement is still a legal marriage

Two of you, a valley place, and an authorised celebrant. Australia still asks for a Notice of Intended Marriage and two adult witnesses. Ask celebrants who already run small legal ceremonies here.

Ask celebrants

An elopement in the Yarra Valley is often two people, a quiet lawn, and a wish to skip the performance. The law does not skip with you. If you are marrying in Australia, you still need an authorised celebrant, a Notice of Intended Marriage given in the national window, and two witnesses aged 18 or over. Those witnesses can be friends, family, or people you arrange with the celebrant. They cannot be a mood.

This page is for legal elopements and for the short civil ceremony that sometimes follows a party you already had. It names no venues. It invents no “average elopement cost”. It tells you what to ask and how to send an enquiry.

What “just us” still requires

Couples use “elopement” to mean several different days:

  • a legal marriage with only the required people present
  • a legal marriage with a handful of witnesses who will also come to lunch
  • a legal-only moment on a weekday, with a larger gathering later or already done
  • a vow renewal they are calling an elopement because the gathering is small

The last of those is different work. If you are already married, you are not lodging a notice. Read vow renewals and say so on the form so celebrants do not prepare the wrong documents.

For a legal marriage, start with authorisation. Search the Register of Marriage Celebrants. Then ask whether the person will work your town, your weekday, and your site — including a backup if the weather turns.

Give the completed notice to that celebrant at least one month and no more than 18 months before the wedding. The Attorney-General’s Department sets the window. If you have less than a month, read getting married and ask about a prescribed authority. Eloping next Thursday because a flight is cheap is not, by itself, a reason the law will bend.

Witnesses, sites and weekdays

Two adult witnesses are the question couples forget. If you are travelling in from interstate or overseas with nobody here, ask the celebrant how they handle that. Do not assume they will supply witnesses. If they can help, it will be a conversation, not a surprise on the lawn.

Sites that look empty on Instagram may still need permission. A lookout, a river bend, a cellar-door row you walked on Sunday — ask. Public land is not a default wedding venue. Private land still needs a wet-weather plan. A two-person ceremony can move faster than a hundred-person one. It cannot move into a place you do not have.

Weekdays are often quieter on Healesville and Yarra Glen roads. They can also mean a site that does not staff weddings on Tuesdays. Confirm the date with the place first, then ask celebrants. Put “weekday elopement” in the message.

Warburton and the Dandenong Ranges suit couples who want trees more than vines. They also punish late Melbourne departures. Build time. Reception is patchy. Do not run the morning on calls.

With two of you, it is tempting to skip a microphone and a proper table. Wind still eats vows. Documents still need a surface. Shade still matters in January. Ask the celebrant what they bring. Agree where you will stand if you move under a verandah.

Photographers sometimes treat an elopement as a portrait job that happens to include a stranger with a folder. Tell them when the legal words and the signing occur. The celebrant is not an extra in the set. Our photography notes apply at this scale too.

If you want cultural words, a language, or no religious language at all, say so. Small is not the same as blank. A good celebrant will still write your ten minutes.

Same-sex couples elope under the same Act. If you want that welcomed without a speech about history unless you ask for one, say so. See same-sex weddings.

After the short ceremony

The celebrant still has duties after a legal marriage, including documents for the Victorian registry when the marriage takes place in Victoria. If you need a certificate for a name change, a visa or a flight, say so early. This page will not invent how long the registry takes.

If lunch is a table for four in town, the celebrant may or may not join. Ask. If you are driving straight to the airport, the signing still has to be unhurried enough to be correct. Build twenty minutes you cannot see on the boarding pass.

Ask for elopement quotes

The form below starts with the elopement style. Choose a town or “not sure yet”, a guest range — “just us” is there — and a date or not. Mention witnesses if you do not have them. We share the enquiry with up to three celebrants. Read privacy.

For intimate gatherings that are not quite an elopement, use small weddings. For the longer legal explainer, use celebrants and the law. Then send the form while the notice window still has room.

An elopement checklist that is not romantic

Before you send the form, write down four facts. Who will witness. Whether the site has given permission for that exact hour. Where you will stand if it rains. When you will give the notice to the celebrant you appoint.

If you are travelling from interstate, build a day that is not the wedding for the paperwork meeting if the celebrant wants to see you in person. Some work can be done at a distance; identity evidence still has to be right. Ask. Do not assume a video call replaces whatever the current form requires.

If you want photographs and a legal moment, decide which comes first. A portrait walk that “starts at 2” and a celebrant booked for 2 is how people sign in a hurry. Give the legal table its own twenty minutes. The valley will still be there afterwards.

Weekday elopements in Healesville or Lilydale can be kinder on roads and harder on venues that do not staff midweek. Confirm the place first. Then ask celebrants. Put the weekday in the subject of your own notes so you do not accidentally hold a Saturday in your head.

If one of you is not an Australian citizen, or if a previous marriage has ended, say that in the message without pasting document numbers. The celebrant will tell you what evidence they need. This site will not. The Department’s form remains the source.

FAQ

Questions couples actually ask

Can two people marry in the Yarra Valley without guests?

You can keep the gathering very small, but a legal marriage in Australia needs an authorised celebrant and two witnesses aged 18 or over. Those witnesses can be friends, family or people you arrange with the celebrant. Ask how they handle witnesses if you are travelling in alone.

Do elopements skip the Notice of Intended Marriage?

No. If you are legally marrying, the notice still goes to your authorised celebrant at least one month and no more than 18 months before the day. The Attorney-General’s Department sets that window.

Can we elope on a weekday in Healesville or Yarra Glen?

Often yes, and weekdays are quieter on the roads. Confirm the site will host a legal ceremony that day, then ask celebrants for quotes with the weekday in the message.

What if we already had a party and only need the legal moment?

Say so on the form. Many celebrants will run a short civil ceremony that covers the legal words, the vows you still want, and the signing. It is still a marriage, not a piece of theatre.

Ready to ask celebrants?

One form. Up to three Yarra Valley celebrants. You choose who you meet.
